BananaDesk is a property management system (PMS) built specifically for small and independent hostels. It centralizes front-desk operations, channel management, and direct bookings in one platform so hostel owners can avoid overbookings and manage their business from a single source of truth.

The channel management module connects a hostel's front desk directly to Booking.com, Airbnb, Expedia and Hostelworld, automatically syncing availability and rates so reservations from any channel land in one calendar without manual updates. BananaDesk sends automatic email alerts if a channel booking can't be fulfilled, helping prevent overbooking incidents.

On the property management side, staff can create individual receptionist accounts, use a drag-and-drop booking calendar to manage and move reservations, track guest account balances, log 'extras' (non-accommodation sales like drinks, bike rentals, or tours), email guests, and export data to Excel. Every booking keeps a full history from creation to checkout.

BananaDesk also includes its own direct booking engine: hostels get a unique booking URL they can use on their own website or social channels, with customizable room photos and descriptions, optimized for mobile and desktop. Hostels can run the booking engine for free (handling payment collection themselves) or let BananaDesk process bookings for a 4% fee via Stripe.

The company (operating as SafeHostel, LLC) has been running the product for close to a decade and markets itself on hands-on human support rather than bots, tutorials, or certification programs — support is delivered directly through chat and Intercom.

Key Features

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Direct channel connections to Booking.com, Airbnb, Expedia and Hostelworld with automatic availability/rate sync to reduce overbookings
  • Includes a built-in direct booking engine that can be run commission-free if the hostel handles its own payment collection
  • Drag-and-drop booking calendar plus per-guest account balances and 'extras' tracking (drinks, tours, rentals) in one screen
  • 14-day free trial with no credit card required, plus a free assisted-transition option for switching from another system
  • Human, non-bot support with an emphasis on direct answers rather than tutorials or certification requirements

Cons

  • Pricing scales by guest capacity, so larger hostels (80+ guests) pay noticeably more per month than small properties
  • The commission-free booking engine requires the hostel to manually collect and confirm payments itself; using BananaDesk's Stripe-based checkout costs a 4% fee
  • Built specifically for hostels — the feature set (dorm/room-type booking, guest 'extras') is not positioned for hotels, vacation rentals, or other property types
  • No public information on API access, integrations beyond the four listed OTAs, or mobile app availability
