Booked is a resource-scheduling tool built to replace paper sign-up sheets and spreadsheets for booking shared resources such as meeting rooms, labs, equipment, and staff time. It started life as phpScheduleIt, an open-source project created by Nick Korbel that grew to hundreds of thousands of downloads; Korbel later founded Twinkle Toes Software in 2013 to support and commercialize it as Booked. Today the product is available two ways: 'Booked Cloud,' a fully managed hosted subscription with unlimited usage and support, and 'Booked On-Prem,' a licensed self-hosted version organizations can run on their own infrastructure. The platform offers a mobile-first, click-and-drag scheduling interface with calendar, search, and floor-plan views, plus admin controls like reservation approval workflows, quotas, automatic no-show cancellation, buffers, custom fields, and tiered roles and permissions. It integrates with Outlook and Google Calendar, can auto-create Zoom meetings, supports Stripe and PayPal for payments, offers SSO via AD/LDAP/CAS/SAML, and exposes an API and pluggable components, including a WordPress plugin.

Key Features

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Deployment flexibility: choose a fully managed cloud subscription or a self-hosted on-premises license
  • Long track record as the open-source phpScheduleIt project, with a mature, widely used codebase
  • Deep admin controls (quotas, approval workflows, buffers, custom fields, tiered permissions) suited to shared-resource booking
  • Broad integration and auth options, including Outlook/Google Calendar, Zoom, Stripe/PayPal, and SSO via AD/LDAP/CAS/SAML

Cons

  • Pricing pages show inconsistent monthly figures ($15 vs $20/mo) for Booked Cloud, so exact current pricing should be confirmed directly with the vendor
  • Self-hosted On-Prem option requires an organization's own infrastructure and technical setup, unlike a pure SaaS product
  • Interface and branding feel dated compared to newer, venture-backed scheduling SaaS competitors
