EssayGrader is an AI essay grading tool for teachers and schools. It reads student writing against a rubric, drafts scores and comments, and leaves the final decision to the teacher, who reviews and adjusts every grade before sharing. The company says it launched in September 2023 and is used by more than 200,000 teachers at over 10,000 schools.
The tool handles narrative, argumentative, expository and other writing assignments. It is aimed mainly at ELA and humanities teachers, though the company says it also works for history, social studies and other essay-based subjects, with any rubric a teacher creates or uploads.
The workflow has three steps. A teacher chooses a rubric from more than 800 standards-aligned options or uploads a custom one. Then the teacher uploads essays from Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, Google Drive, OneDrive or a computer. The AI reads each paper criterion by criterion and drafts scores and comments.
The teacher then reviews the results, adds personal comments and shares them with students through the LMS. Teachers can also upload two or three graded exemplars so the tool follows their scoring patterns, and add prompts, source texts or class readings for more context-aware grading.
Grading features include bulk upload, rubric and state-standards scoring, and handwriting recognition. Teachers can scan handwritten essays into one PDF, and the tool separates and transcribes each student's work. A status view marks essays as queued, graded - needs review, or graded.
Feedback and integrity tools include color-coded feedback built on Hattie and Timperley's model, side-by-side revision comparison, sentence-level AI-writing detection, and plagiarism checks against the web and other classroom submissions. Insights cover writing trends, growth profiles, intervention lists and a reteach priority list.

The company reports that on an external dataset of 22,000 essays from The Learning Agency, its scores matched or landed within one point of teacher scores 94% of the time. This is a self-reported benchmark.
According to the company, student work is never used to train AI models and data is never shared or sold. It also states that data is stored in the U.S. and that teachers can delete data at any time.
