TOPS (Terminal Operating System) is the flagship product of Realtime Business Solutions (RBS), an Australian software company formed in 1991 that has worked exclusively in the container handling industry for over three decades. TOPS is built to run container terminals of every type — marine ports, rail terminals, truck terminals, and dry/inland/intermodal ports — across six continents, with installations documented in Australia, Brazil, Egypt, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Panama, Romania, Taiwan, Togo and Vietnam.

The product line centers on TOPS Expert Enterprise, which combines TOPO Expert (described by RBS as the "foundation system" for automatically receiving and manually manipulating terminal data) with TOPX Expert, a real-time graphical container planning, monitoring and control system. RBS also offers TOPS Expert Cloud, a cloud-hosted deployment of the same platform with usage-based pricing, and TOPX Intelligent 3D, a digital-twin visualization layer for monitoring terminal operations in 3D. Terminals on the older TOPS Advance system have a documented migration path to the Expert platform. A TOPS KPI Dashboard provides remote management, data analysis and historical performance mining on top of the core system.

RBS supplements the core TOS with a set of optional modules covering billing, report design, Container Freight Station (CFS) management, Vehicle Booking System (VBS), DGPS, Gate Operating System (GOS) interfaces, reefer container monitoring, truck appointment scheduling, a web report server, and third-party web service integrations — allowing terminals to add capabilities as their operations scale. Recent deployments referenced by RBS include a TOS migration and system upgrade at Klaipedos Smelte Container Terminal in Lithuania.

Key Features

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Over 30 years of experience focused exclusively on container terminal software, since 1991
  • Deployed across six continents in at least 15 countries, indicating broad real-world validation
  • Transparent, published per-TEU pricing calculator for the cloud edition rather than a pure "contact us" black box
  • Modular architecture (billing, CFS, VBS, gate interface, reefer monitoring, truck appointments) lets terminals scale functionality as they grow
  • Migration path offered from the legacy TOPS Advance system to the current Expert platform, reducing switching risk for existing customers

Cons

  • Highly specialized to container terminal operations, so it is not a fit outside the port/rail/truck-terminal niche
  • Full enterprise pricing is custom-quoted and excludes one-off project services and implementation costs, so buyers won't get a complete cost picture from the website alone
  • The public site provides limited self-serve detail on individual module capabilities, screenshots, or documentation compared to typical SaaS products
  • As legacy-system customers are still being migrated (TOPS Advance to Expert), the product line spans older and newer architectures
