Zotero is a free and open-source personal research assistant built by the nonprofit Corporation for Digital Scholarship (originally developed at George Mason University's Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media). It lets researchers, students, and academics automatically capture citations and source material while browsing academic databases, preprints, news sites, and library catalogs, then organize them into collections with tags and saved searches. Zotero generates citations and bibliographies in over 9,000 citation styles and inserts them directly into Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, or Google Docs. Desktop apps are available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, with companion apps for iOS and Android and browser connectors for capturing sources on the go. The core software and 300MB of cloud storage are free forever; ongoing development is funded in part by optional paid Zotero Storage subscriptions (2GB, 6GB, and unlimited tiers) that sync files across devices and let users share group libraries at no extra cost.
