What is Float?

Float is a short-term cash flow management and forecasting tool from The Float Yard Ltd, based in Edinburgh. It connects to Xero and QuickBooks Online and builds a rolling cash flow forecast from live accounting data, so finance teams work from real bank balances, invoices and bills instead of a manually maintained spreadsheet.

The company describes Float as the cash decision layer between accounting software and reporting or FP&A tools. It does not handle invoicing, accounting or general ledger management. The site says more than 8,000 finance teams use it, mainly CFOs, finance directors and their teams at businesses that have outgrown spreadsheets but do not yet need a full FP&A platform.

How does Float work?

After a user authorizes the connection to Xero or QuickBooks Online, Float imports the company and pulls the latest reconciled bank balances, invoices, bills and bank transactions. It syncs every 24 hours, and a manual sync can be triggered at any point. Because the forecast uses data that has cleared the accounting platform, it reflects what has actually been paid and received.

For each forecast line, Float uses whichever is larger, the budget amount or the actual transaction. If a £10,000 invoice lands against a £15,000 budget, the forecast uses £15,000; if the invoice is larger, it uses the invoice. Float also spots recurring costs in transaction history and suggests them, which cuts down on manual entry.

Key features of Float

The forecast can be viewed monthly, over 13 weeks or weekly, with the monthly view reaching up to three years. Scenario planning lets users toggle income and cost lines on or off, model what-if cases and price new hires. AR and AP views show each invoice and bill with expected dates, based on when clients actually pay rather than invoice terms.

For teams, Float adds comments on budget lines, invoices, bills and payments, mention notifications, and Admin, Editor and Viewer roles. Multi-entity consolidation combines selected companies into one view with currency conversion. Reports can be presented live in presentation mode or exported as CSV or PDF straight from the live forecast.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Builds a rolling forecast directly from live Xero or QuickBooks Online data, reducing manual spreadsheet upkeep.
  • Offers weekly, 13-week and monthly views, with the monthly forecast reaching up to three years.
  • Every figure links back to the transaction or budget it came from, which makes numbers easier to defend.
  • Growth includes unlimited users, 8 scenarios and an onboarding video call at no extra cost.
  • Comments, mentions and Admin, Editor and Viewer roles keep cash discussions attached to the data.
  • 14-day free trial with no credit card, and the site says most users have a working forecast in under 5 minutes.

Cons

  • Only Xero and QuickBooks Online are supported today; Sage Intacct and iplicit are still listed as coming soon.
  • Float does not connect to banks directly, so it only sees data that has reached your accounting platform.
  • Data syncs every 24 hours by default, so changes between syncs need a manual sync.
  • It does not handle invoicing, accounting or general ledger work, and it is not a full FP&A platform.
