What is DuoBolt?

DuoBolt is a duplicate file and similar photo finder for macOS and Windows, published by Qoncept Apps. It runs two separate engines: one proves that files are identical byte for byte, and the other groups photos that look alike and ranks them. The two are kept apart on purpose, so a proven duplicate is never confused with a visual near-match.

The app is free to use with no account. It shows every result on every scan, and the free limit applies only to how much one cleanup or sync carries out: 25 files or 500 MiB. Paid licenses are one-time purchases, and the site lists version 2.4.3 as the current release.

How does DuoBolt work?

For exact duplicates, DuoBolt hashes files with BLAKE3 and reads every byte before calling two files identical. It works on any file type and any drive, including mounted NAS shares. It walks every scan root in parallel and hashes on all CPU cores. Finding duplicates never decodes a file, so a duplicate HEIC is found on Windows just as on a Mac.

For similar photos, DuoBolt groups images by appearance rather than by name or date, and the user sets how close a match must be. A review step then ranks each group with on-device AI and explains the pick. Inference runs inside the app, and the only network calls are license checks and the update check.

Key features of DuoBolt

Scan controls sit under Customize. Users can skip system files, hidden files, library containers and photo libraries, filter by extension, set a size range from 1 KiB to unlimited, and follow or collapse symlinks. Files that exist only in iCloud Drive or OneDrive can stay in the cloud or be downloaded for the scan.

On the cleanup side there are five actions: Trash, an Archive folder, copy elsewhere, delete outright, or on APFS replace a copy with a clone. Protected Folders make files unselectable, and scan and operations history record what ran so files can be restored. Sync Folders compares two folders and can mirror either way or sync both ways.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • One-time licenses with no subscription and no account; Standard is $34.99 and Pro is $64.99.
  • Exact duplicates are verified with full BLAKE3 hashes that read every byte.
  • Free tier shows every result; the limit applies only to what one cleanup or sync carries out.
  • Photo AI runs on the device, with no upload and no sign-in.
  • Never deletes on its own; Trash, Archive, history and restore are built in.
  • Reads RAW files from many camera makers and can scan the macOS Photos library.

Cons

  • Similar-photo grouping beyond the first 8 groups, and AI Curation everywhere, require the $64.99 Pro tier.
  • A Softpedia reviewer called it quite expensive for a duplicate cleaner.
  • Free cleanup and sync are capped at 25 files or 500 MiB per operation.
  • On Windows, HEIC and AVIF photos are skipped silently without two Microsoft Store add-ons.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is DuoBolt?

DuoBolt is a duplicate file and similar photo finder for macOS and Windows. One engine proves exact duplicates byte for byte with BLAKE3, and another groups look-alike photos and ranks them with on-device AI. It also includes Sync Folders for comparing two folders.

How much does DuoBolt cost?

DuoBolt is free to use, with Standard at $34.99 and Pro at $64.99, both one-time purchases with 2 seats. There is no subscription. A 30-day refund applies to purchases.

Does DuoBolt have a free version or trial?

Yes. The free version shows every result but limits each cleanup or sync to 25 files or 500 MiB. Every download also starts with 7 days of Pro, with no account or card needed.

Does DuoBolt upload my photos?

No. The AI runs in-process on the user's machine and no account is required. The only network calls the site lists are license checks and the update check.

What is the difference between Standard and Pro?

Standard removes the per-operation cleanup limit. Pro adds similar-photo groups beyond the first 8, AI Curation everywhere, face-aware ranking, RAW reading and full Photos library support on macOS.

Does DuoBolt delete files automatically?

No. Nothing moves until the user confirms. Options are Trash, an Archive folder, copying elsewhere, deleting outright, or replacing with an APFS clone on macOS. Only outright deletion is final.

Does DuoBolt work on a NAS?

DuoBolt scans a mounted NAS share, such as a Synology or QNAP, from a Mac or PC. It installs nothing on the NAS and skips snapshot folders that would make files look duplicated.

Will my license cover future versions?

A license covers DuoBolt 2 and every 2.x update. Major versions may be a paid upgrade, discounted for existing owners, and the version you own keeps working.
