Hitsteps is a real-time web analytics platform that shows where visitors come from and what they do on a website. Its main view is a live visitor feed that follows each visit from the first referrer to later pages and return visits. The site says it has been maintained since 2013 across changing website platforms and browsers.
Beyond traffic counts, Hitsteps bundles tools that act on visitor behavior. These include heatmaps, live chat, uptime monitoring, Segments, Funnels, UTM campaign reports and commerce analytics for online stores.
It also adds AI features. Hitsteps AI answers questions about your traffic inside the dashboard, an MCP plugin connects your own AI assistant, and AI referral tracking shows visits that come from AI tools.
Setup has three steps. You create a site in Hitsteps, install one tracking tag, then open your site and verify the visit. Your first visitors then appear in the live dashboard. You can install through a plugin or a tracking snippet.
Once tracking runs, Hitsteps records pageviews, referrers, UTM tags and Actions, which are interactions that pageviews cannot describe, such as adding a product to a cart or choosing a plan. Custom Actions need event setup on your website.
Segments and Funnels build on this data. A Segment uses conditions such as pages viewed, referrer, location, browser or Actions, and Hitsteps rebuilds eligible retained matches up to the shorter of 30 days and your plan's history allowance. Funnels chain Segments into a measurable journey.
The live visitor feed and heatmaps cover behavior on the site. Heatmaps show which links and buttons people click and which they overlook. Live chat lets staff answer questions while the visitor's journey appears beside the conversation. Uptime monitoring alerts you when the website goes down.
For marketing, the UTM campaign report shows the first campaign that acquired each visitor or their latest tagged touch, with goals and goal revenue. A URL builder creates tagged links. Ad traffic detection classifies paid visits from click IDs and campaign tags, but the site notes these signals are not ad-account API verification.
Other tools include internal search keywords, custom dimensions, saved reports with CSV export, chart annotations, and commerce analytics that link orders, products and revenue to visitor journeys.
